  1. There are no internationally famous ones. Italy was a collection of city-states after the fall of Rome and well into the 18th century. Each city had it's own ruling class or family. It was late in becoming a nation just as the Prussian states were late in joining together to form Germany.

  4. Catherine de Medici of the Florentine Medici clan. She married the King of France and if I recall rightly ruled France for a while as regent for her son.
