- Italy is divided into 20 regions maybe that's what your teacher was trying to get across to you. Um, much like other countries people who live in Italy are Italians and can be of any ethnic descent. Southern Italians tend to be dark skinned because it's believed that they are descended from Africans (sicilians will especially refute that claim) Northern Italians can have blonde hair and blue eyes like the Swiss. But those are just two very broad examples, no one "ethnicity" is pure.
- The northern Italians are fairer because of the Visigoths that invaded. They never made it to the south. The south was conquered by several groups, including Carthage (Hannibal's people), which had olive complexions, brown hair & eyes.
- We don't know and it's not sure. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Italy was invaded by a lot of barbarian people. Germans, Slaves, Normans, Arabs etc. But some years ago an English University have studied the DNA of a few representative persons by the north, the centre and the south of Italy and the results were surpreising. The chromosomes of the centre - italians is not very different by that of the ancient Romans, of the north - italians by that of the ancient Celtic people and of the south - italians by that of the ancient Greeks. Excuse me for my horrible english. Ciao.
