Why Italy

Why is the number 13 lucky in the Italian culture?

I have know this to be true growing up in an Italian home, but no one can seem to tell me why...only that 17 is bad and 13 is lucky.

  1. good question, cuase to americans its unlucky, and to ukrainians it doesnt mean a thing!
  2. Jesus Christ plus his apostles (12) equals 13 .Numerically there is no such thing as unlucky numbers only the people are the one`s creating such belief for whatever purpose, latter it becomes superstition.
  3. siete sicuri? ho pensato che soltanto la gente superstiziosa pensata così
  4. Not sure why 13 is lucky in Italia culture, however 13 is unlucky, and friday the 13th in particular, in most of Christiandom because it is the day the Knights Templar were betrayed by the Pope and most were killed.
  5. I'm an Italian. My Dad was born in Italy. I asked him the same question when I was growing up. And from my best memory, he told me that if the grape vines started to have grapes (not full grown) 13 days after the first leaves started to grow...it would be a good grape and wine season. If leaves started to grow on the 17th day...the grapes would not have enough sugar and would not make good wine. Believe it or not!
  6. twelve jury's one judge and a half ass chance.
