Italy-Vienna Trenitalia international train help!?
I'm going from Vienna to Florence roundtrip. My travel agent wants to sell me a Eurail pass, but from the Trenitalia (Italy rail), it seems much cheaper to buy point-to-point tickets. But I can't get point-to-point reservations on internat'l trains here in US. Or can I? Any suggestions? Ann Responses have been great. Looks like the best bet is to use Rail Europe for one way to Vienna-Florence and then get the return ticket in Florence. Or is that a bad idea? Ann

- Well..first there really is no need to make any reservations ..no train will be fully booked..and you can buy your ticket right up until your train leaves..and even on the train sometimes! But if you want to here is the site for you (and you can book online!)..
- Try the Austrian Railways at www.oebb.at. They allow booking and making reservations over the net.
- Your travel agent (coming from a travel agent) is an idiot! You can purchase point to point tickets www.raileurope.com If you are traveling during a busy season, I suggest you do. Italy is very popular this year. I apologize for your travel agent. It is agents like yours that make a lot of experienced, qualified consultants look bad.
- Your least expensive option would be point-to-point tickets purchased when you arrive in Europe. German Rail lets you plan your train travel throughout Europe. It's very easy to use. http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en? "Tariff abroad For connections outside of Germany, a special ticket is required. These offers are not bookable via the internet. Tickets may be purchased in any DB ReiseZentrum, authorised travel agencies or over the telephone using DB ReiseService by dialing 11861 (toll call)." It's a long trip: (Vienna) Wien Südbahnhof (Florence) Firenze S.M.N. 10:42 (Ten hours and three quarter hours WHEN there are NO changes required).
