Cheapest way to travel from one city to another in Italy??

I will be going to Italy from Dec 18 - 26. I was thinking train is probably the cheapest way to travel from one city to another. Can anyone confirm this? Also what's an estimate price? The citys I will go to are Venice, Milan, Florence and Rome. also, will it be cheaper if I book the train online rather than buying them at the train stop?

1. I did the same paths and used Italian trains. They are by far the cheapest. The trains are priced differently depending on how fast you want to get there. Three types are: Regional - Within the province or state Intercity- Interstate Eurostar- Fast and luxurious more than one province/state The slowest train ride from Florence to Rome will cost you about €25.00. with Eurostar Check out http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html It will give you all you need. 2. Yup, trains in Italy are pretty cheap (especially compared to the UK). They're fast too - I got from Rome to Florence in under 3 hours. Price-wise, I don't think I paid more than 20 euros - but it's probably best to check with the Italian tourist board. Also: don't forget to ask about train times around Xmas - sometimes (especially on religious holidays) the whole country just shuts down completely & transport may be few & far between. Have a good trip!
3. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmotorbike!!! Rent one and have a bucket of fun, if your up for the experience. The other traffic is not as crazy in the countryside, as they are in Rome!

7. in italy they say that there is no cheaper way than "i cavalli di san francesco" (saint francis' horses, meaning your own feet)
8. I'm Italian and I can tell you that bus travels are usually cheaper, even though there's not a huge difference from train fares. Besides, trains may be much faster if you're moving among cities or quite big towns. Be careful, because you will find almost no means of transport on Christmas day. Check for information at the national train timetable web site (trenitalia).
9. The train is the cheapest way to get around...get a europass...they sell them online. You'll be able to go on the train freely for the amount of time you buy the pass for.
10. well, for shorter distances trains are ok. but they waste a bunch of time and they are not so cheap anymore! there are cheap and faster: airlines that are flying internally and i would say that is a great option. (ryanair, easyjet.........)
