Most economical way is to take advantage of the 29/39 euro promotion for the Eurostar(ES) trains or the 15 euro promotion for the IC or IC Plus trains from Trenitalia. Otherwise, buy 2nd class seats from Trenitalia. Rail travel through Italy is convenient, cheap and the best way to go. You can buy your tickets only 60 days in advance, however. You can buy them several ways: 1) ticketless, over the internet. Show the conductor your email and PNR number when he passes and he will issue you your ticket. If you don't get the Trenitalia email response in your "inbox", check your spam or junkmail folder, it might be there.
