2. You really don't need a tour. They cost a ton of money and you are locked into someone elses schedule. Before you purchase a tour I would suggest at least going to a book store and reviewing the "Let's Go Italy" book. It had more useful knowledge in it than you can imagine. After being there in May I still would not do a tour. They won't take you to the most precious places in Italy - the allies. Getting lost is one of the most fun things you can imagine. Plus you can't really get lost too long, every city is very small by American standards.

4. Thebest tour is to do it yourself. It normally works out cheaper and you get a far more authentic Italian experience. The ideal is to select a region or two and choose a good base. Then rent a house or apartment there and hire a car to explore. You will really have an experience of a lifetime.
5. I went through Explorica. It was very convienent. It didn't cost too much, and the price of the tour included breakfast and dinner each day. You're also allowed a certain amount of free time each day.
