Why Italy

Are the trains in Italy a good way to travel from Livorno-Florence-Pisa and Civitavecchia-Rome?

We are going on a cruise with ports of call at Livorno and Civitavecchia. We have three children 11, 12 and 15 traveling with us and do not want to be tied down to a guided tour of the cities.

  1. Yes, the trains are an excellent choice for those routes. You can find schedules and prices here: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD For example, Livorno to Florence is approximately an hour and a half for 6.60 euro per person in 2nd class for the three adults (including the 15 year old) and 3.30 euro for the two younger kids (4 to 12 years old). The Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence is easy walking distance to the attractions. The station in Civitavecchia is not far from the port and there are frequent trains to Rome.
  2. we just have a problem in Italy... the trains are always late... sometimes one hour!!!
