If you want to get back to the foundation, it was the arrival in Italy in 1453 of Greek scholars from the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire in Constantinople who were fleeing the invasion of the Ottoman Turks and who brought with them knowledge which dated from ancient Greece and also included newer ideas, especially in mathematics, which had been discovered and developed in India and transmitted to Constantinople by Arab scholars or by Greeks who had been to the area of Mesopotamia (modern Iraq).
