  1. Hi, how the hell do you think we could answer this question?? Sorry, this topic is very large and hard to tell on a web-site. I am Italian and I can only give you some information that are not so specific as you wish. Dante Alighieri gave birth to the Italian language, at least in written terms. The language was born in Toscana, it developped from latin, but, since common people were illiterate, they comunicated among them using another type of language, which was called at first "volgare". Dante was the first who used "volgare" in a written text. This helped the spreading of the first form of the language all around Italy. Anyway latin remained the official language spoken in the courts, and in churches too. Only about 50 years ago, a pope, whose name I don't remember, decided to choose the Italian language for the masses. Italian became the official language in Italy only in 1860, when Garibaldi united the varied states under the same crown of Vittorio Emanuele's. hope it helps. kiss
