How dangerous is it to travel to Italy alone?
I'm planning on going to Perugia, Italy on a 5 day break while studying abroad in London. I don't have anyone to go with, I do not know much Italian, I'll be going alone, and I'm a first-timer in Europe. How dangerous is this trip and what safety precautions would you suggest?

- Italy is a civilized country. However, as happens everywhere in the world these days, you'd be safer if you avoided carrying handbags.Use a money-belt. Also avoid going around alone late at night and under no circumstances allow anyone to try and befriend you. I'm sure you'll enjoy Italy and really hope you'll have a very nice time.
- Make a photo copy of your passport. Money belt: okay. Credit card: yes. You'll be safe as long as you don't 'look' like a potential victim.
- Italy is a great country, and generally very safe. You didn't mention whether you were male or female - it shouldn't matter, but, as most people know, it is sometimes not as safe for females :( However, I've been to Italy twice by myself, speaking only English and Russian, and with my US passport - it was great, I felt safe in each city I visited (everywhere between Venice and Rome), Italians are very hospitable and helpful if you ask for directions, and most younger Italians speak comprehensible English. Obviously, as the other answerers suggested, carry only what you need while out and about - make a copy of your passport, try to blend in with the crowd (don't make yourself obvious as a tourist, with a fanny pack and walking with a map), and don't get drunk or disorderly (it's gives other Western foreigners a horrible reputation and makes you vulnerable). Other than that, you should you be good. Have fun!
- watch for gypsies carrying fake infants on crowded buses, trains, etc. i never had problems of safety, just an incident when a "baby" kicked me , i grabbed his "feet" and the "mother" left at the next stop. i think it was an empty blanket and she was searching for a breast-pocket wallet. relax, stay aware and have fun!
- I travelled mostly by myself in europe and felt safe pretty much everywhere, but I did take precautions....my bag was ALWAYS zipped up and even had ties on top of that ( annoying to get into but i felt safer)..in the metro i kept my bag on my lap or between my feet...just be sensible and don't give anyone a REASON to have the chance. I never went to Perugia so can't help you with that, but I know about 3 words in Italian and found it pretty easy to get around...the place is set up for tourists! Have a great time and soak in the scenery as its wonderful!
