How can I find cheap flights to Italy from Australia?

I am traveling to Italy mid July 2009 for around 3 weeks. I will be flying from Sydney but can fly to any airport in Italy. I was considering Milan or Rome or into Milan and depart from Rome. Also when would be the cheapest time to book?
