What are the closest and best cities in Italy to travel to from Nice, France?
I'm going for a week and worried that things will get boring in Nice after a few days ( after visiting the Old Town, Monaco) so was wondering which Italian cities nearby I could get to by hopping on a train. I know Turin, Genoa and Milan are nearby, which is best? and any information on how to get there by any other means, how long it will take, tips anything would be good. I wanted to go to Rome but would like to save that for next year- I don't want a quick one day trip there- so northern Italy would be better, I know Venice is nice but it would cost me too much to get there... Thanks in advance!

- Milan for fashion Try Piedmont, house of savoy and everything is there :) Genoa is also good, birth place of Mazzini, the original founder of italy as a whole united state, I also think there is somethign there about Garibaldi....(he was the onewho took acton into unifying italy, mazzini was a thinker) xxx
- depends what you want. if you want a coastal option, then genoa is ideal whilst turin is a good hub for the italian mountains. milan is a very cultural so their all worth visits. verona might also be worth checking out if your near milan.
- A fast train will get you to Genova in about 3 hours....Milano is two hours past that. Therefore, please realize that to visit Genova or Milano on a 'day trip' means you'd be on a train for at least 6 or 10 hours, respectively. Not my idea of a 'day trip' The fastest train to Rome would take nearly 9 hours. Unless this is what you want to do, why not find out what interesting places are an hour or so [by bus or train] from Nice?
- Milan is not all that mate, nice cathedral and nothing much else. Train along the coast to Marseille ...up to nimes-arles-avignon or along the coast, much nicer.
