The paper work is done all that is left for me to go to MEPS and sigh my contract. If I keep my current MOS they give me my pick of Duty Station. So pleae tell me the best base that would fit me. - They are both excellent locations. You will get to travel around Eurpoe by train being in either one of them. You really can't go wrong with either one.
- Look at HQ USAREUR/7th Army in Heidelberg, Germany. It's a small university town. The Germans are very friendly there and are used to foreigners from all around the world. Here's a little picture gallery of the town: http://goeurope.about.com/od/heidelberg/l/bl_heidelberg_3.htm I spent 6 years there - I extended an enlistment to stay another two years beyond what I was supposed to. And I also separated from the military and lived there for a couple of years. Some people didn't like being in a non-English speaking country - but I loved it. A really nice place.
- It's really a matter of opinion, those are both really good posts, but I would pick Germany. There's so much history and cuture there, and you really just can't beat German beer!
- I've been in the Navy for twenty years now and have traveled to both places. Germany was wild!! I have no doubt that you will have a blast there. Sense you're single I suggest you stay that way. You may be tempted to marry someone from there and it will be a huge mistake. Stay single as long as you possibly can because after you get married it's over. You're in the prime of your life - enjoy it!
- If it's not Iraq anywhere is wonderful! If you can, try to get a place in Italy where you have a car and get a few days off every now and then. Get on the autostrada and go to a different region every time and sample the local cuisine of every city you can.
- 4 tours in Germany and loved every one of them. You are centered on Europe and can visit almost anywhere over a 3 day weekend. 4 hour train ride to Paris for instance. And I would kill for a Yeagersnitzel right now.
- Personally, I loved my time in Italy.
- I loved Germany, the beer, the scenery, the beer. the location is better because it is in central Europe and you can see other countries easier. I was in K-town. The people are friendly, for the most part, and did I mention the Beer is better?
- We were stationed in Germany and would go back there tomorrow if we could. Germany is more central to everything in Europe. Poland 6 hours, Czech about 2 hours, Paris (France) about 5 hours, Belgium 3-4 hours, Switzerland 4-5 hours, Italy about 6-8 hours, Holland 3 hours, you get my point. And of course the autobahn is great, the food in germany is wonderful (the brats, beer, pretzel, the bakeries, the fresh meat and food, the brochten (bread), and the candies), and of course you can't forget Okterberfest. Very nice. Italy is nice to, we went there to visit a few times and can't wait to go back there again. But if I had to choose it would be germany. Either place make sure you take advantage of the cheap airfare (Ryan Air sometimes you can get it for like 1 penny once way plus taxes), stay at hostels, or stay at camping centers while you travel. Take the train (very easy to do), and do some hiking and biking. Alot of bases are closing in Germany due to the downsizing but Heidelburg is nice and Graf is updating their base. You will love it in either place as long as you get out and explore what is around you. Take advantage of being there.
- Germany f++++ing blows try italy. i have been in germany for 4 years. adn i will be here another 2. the exchange rate for the euro sucks and most of the luxurys you have in america are all gone trust me please try italy. better food, warmer. it is miserable here only 3 monthes of summer
- I didnt like either but if you ask my wife and kids, they will tell you germany. The loved to travel and experience everything that Germany had to offer. They would be so happy if I could get my last 7 years in Germany.
