  1. I had to go to Italy for work for a month and I wanted to learn a bit of Italian so I bought an English-Italian Dictionary which came in handy over there and before I went I got some tapes at Barnes & Noble called Learning Italian which taught me common phrases, words and pronunciation. I would reccommend both. It's very similar to Spanish so if you know some Spanish it'll help you catch on as well. I held several conversations with the villagers and my questions and answers were always understood, it's the best way to learn conversational Italian. I caught on pretty quickly.
  2. Pimsleur audio courses are quite good : www.pimsleurapproach.com Consider that Italian has a quite complex grammar, so you won't learn it just listening to an audio course. If you can't join a language school, I suggest you to get a grammar book and a dictionary in addition to a tape. Learn some grammar, then read as much as you can in Italian. Try to exchange E-mails with native speakers, and if you have the chance, watch movies in Italian.
  3. Speak the language with some1 who knows Itallian
  4. pimsleur italian. you can buy it online or Borders Book Stores
