- If you take your time it can take as long as you want, but regularly is about a day's trip, I would say. Taking an early train to Milan will get you there in the afternoon in time to catch a train to Venice. That first part of the journey is worth every penny especially if it happens to be a sunny day. Do not make it any other time but in daylight. All the way to Como, Italy is a fantastic journey that justifies the train travel.
- There are direct trains during the day that take 6 to 8 hours depending on the specific train you take. For example, there's the Canaletto Eurocity train that leaves Zurich at 9:09 am and arrives in Venice at 5:08 pm (just over 7 hours), or the Cisalpino 155 that leaves Zurich at 1:09 pm and arrives in Venice at 7:18 pm (just over 6 hours). However, this last one arrives at the Mestre station on the mainland and does not go on to the Santa Lucia station in Venice itself. You would transfer to another train for another 10 minute ride across the causeway. There are other options that require one or more train changes. One possibility would be to take the night train from Zurich to Bologna (arrives at 5:19 am) and catch the 6:02 am train from there to Venice. The total trip takes 10 hr 45 min, but you can sleep in a berth through the night and save on a hotel room.
