- Allegro. Means cheerful in Italian. It may be Latin based though. Used in music tempo.
- nuncio, magnifico, mountebank, umbrella, gondola, mustachio, bandit, firm (company), motto, artichoke, cupola, piazza, stucco, portico, grotto, balcony, dado, concert, vio da gamba, fresco, stanza, canto, regatta, lagoon, muslin, opera, sonata, largo, piano, intaglio, profile, vista, chiaroscuro, burlesque, ghetto, casino, vendetta, mafia, malaria, influenza, lava, breccia, travertine, loggia, studio, soprano, trombone, viola, cantata, concerto, aria, finale, andante, adagio, crescendo, tempo, bravo, piccolo, prima donna, sestet, scherzo, contrapuntal, imbroglio I have only included words that came directly from Italian. Other English words came from Italian through French and there are modern food words that are not included. This is not a complete list and does not include a number of words borrowed in the twentieth century. LATER: Ricki's list has a couple of errors--assassin did not come into English from Italian, but from French, dome came from French. LATER EDIT FOR DEE J: As with many words, the ultimate origin of a word is not necessarily the language that English got the word from. "Assassin" is from hashishiyyin, an Arabic word (not Turkish) that means "hashish-users". The word then entered French as "assassin" and it was from French that English got the word.
- pasta (and kinds of pasta: spaghetti, ziti, lasagna, tortellini) pizza (obviously) zucchini, mozzarella piano (Italian for soft) piccolo (Italian for small) bravo solo vendetta, mafia
- Bravo! some good words there! As an aside, I believe that the word assassin actually comes from the Turkish? hashishin (or something like that). I seem to remember that these Muslim fighters would get high before taking on the Christian crusaders.
