Why Italy

How come so many people absolutely detest the taste of Pinot Grigio?

I, personally, love it. However, every single person I know who has tried it has taken one sip, then immediately has this terrible expression on their face as if they had just drunk a glass of pure chlorine! Why is that? Also, what is the correct pronunciation of Pinot Grigio? I pronounce it "Pee-noh Gree-joe," (like an Italian--not exactly like "joe," but no other word came closer to how I pronounce it). Everone else I've been around pronounces it like "Pee-noh Gree-gee-oh." The "gee" being pronounced like one of those old 1950's expressions, "Golly Gee!" or "Gee whiz!" Thanks! Well, yeah--but in Italian "grigio" means "gray," and is pronounced like #1...so...yeah...I'm just not sure. Like, "giorno" in Italian means "day" and is pronounced like "djor-noh"--the "i" isn't pronounced--it only softens the "g." I was just wondering because everyone I hear in America pronounces it like #2.

  1. Correct pronouncement is #2. I love Pinot. I would guess that most people ALWAYS pick the same thing over and over and over and over. Have you ever tried Viognier? I think you would like it. Check out the website. I am NOT an employee or owner or have any financial interest in the winery. Their Pinot, Viognier, and Reisling are the best.
  2. I enjoy Pinot Grigio. But I must confess I am more fond of a good Merlot. And the second pronunciation is correct. In the Romance languages, all vowels are pronounced. Just as in Giorgio.
  3. Personally, I have had it and liked it. I don't drink much wine so I don't have to deal with the heartache of how its pronounced.
  4. i love it,
  5. I enjoy PG. It's not my favorite, and I prefer red over white. But as whites go, it beats the heck out of Chardonnay.
