can someone tell me what Vincent Van Gogh is trying to show in the painting of the italian women?

- Van Gogh always had difficulty in finding female models. He was interested in painting types of people in their characteristic costumes - as here - rather than in painting portraits. In a letter he wrote he spoke about his depictions of costumed models like this one saying that they fell into 3 categories: faithful rendering of the figure dressed in fine clothes; portraits where the form ...conveys the impression; and as here - where the painter - shapes "a work for the sake of doing so, because of the sheer, unending beauty of it" So this is what he was trying to show: the beauty of the model and her costume.
