How did the working lives of immigrant Chinese, German,Irish, and Italian women in the late 19 century differ?

  1. I think my friend, you have to be more accurate. You refer to "immigrants". But in what country? if u give this detail then we can talk about it. Cheers!
  2. I suspect as most of these immigrants came over, they all had different cultural backgrounds. They tended to live and work within their own communities and took care of one another. The German, Irish and Italians all have European backgrounds, but once in American they stuck to their individual clans and it took a while for the "melting pot" to assimilate the different nationalities. Even now there are German, Irish and Italian parts of New York. The Chinese immigrants seem to have come from a less industrialized environment and seemed to make do with less. Again, they stick together. Just take a look at the China Towns in Los Angeles or San Francisco. Did the women all work? Yes, but in different fields. Traditionally the Chinese worked in laundries or restaurants. Many of the European based women supported their husbands in stores or raising families.
