What is the best way to travel from Italy to Greece?

I want to plan a trip to Naples, Italy and then go to Santorini. I know flying is probably best, but I want to know what is fastest and cheapest. How long does it take to take a train or ferry? And please, no lists of websites. All I want are straight answers.

  1. Best may well depend on how much time you have, but I prefer to travel the Med by cruise liner!
  2. If you take the train, you'll need quite a few days, since you need to go along the Adriatic all the way up to it's northern end, and than again all the way south though the Balkan peninsula. And than board the ferry from, I don't know, let's say Athens. I really would recommend you to take a ferry to cross the Adriatic Sea and than take one of the Greek domestic ferry lines. It will still last a couple of days. And it's not cheap. So find a low cost carrier and fly from Italy to Greece and than take one of their domestic lines. But believe me, taking the ferry can be an awesome adventure...
  3. OK, you can catch a ferry to one of the Ionian Islands such as kefalonia, corfu, etc, and then catch another ferry to Patra, and from then on to athens, and then a ferry to Santorini. Then you get to see lots of magnificent places, and you travel for less....
  4. definately by plane, since there are many airline companies such as Olympi airlines, alitalia, alpi eagle, airone, aegean with very good offers...If you wish by other means, you can take the boat from Brindisi, Bari, Ancona, Venice and arrive to Igoumenitsa, or Patra, and then by car to reach Athens..But this takes a lot of time, and dont think that it is going to cost less than an airline offer if it is booked early
  5. Ferries go from Patras to Italy. To Bari & Aconna daily. There are cabins ,aircraft style seats and on deck~
  6. I think from the Balkans, from the North of Italy, u'll see Slovenia, the Dalmatian coast and Croatia the beautiful coast of Montenegro, the the wonderful nature of Albania and than finally u'll arrive and see what u want in Greece.
  7. S-L-O-W-L-Y
  8. Unless you have a car to transport, or just want to go out of your way to take in the scenery, your only option is to fly. I think Aegean Airlines fly Rome to Santorini. Otherwise, you'll probably have to get a connection on that or another airline through Athens. The ferry from Italy to Greece is very popular among European tourists, but since you want to end up in Santorini, it's not worth your time or money. A cruise from Bari, Brindisi or Ancona to Patra takes about 24 hours, and costs 50 - 250 euros per person, depending on the time of year and type of onboard accommodation. But you'd still have to find transport from Naples to Bari, and from Patra to Santorini. Patra doesn't really have a civil airport, so you'd have to take a bus from Patra to Athens. Then ferry or plane to Santorini. As for the train idea, that's only something to consider if you really really want to look out windows for a couple of days. You'd have to go all the way up the Italian peninsula, then east, then all the way down the Balkans, into Greece, and then Athens.
