should i buy a railpass for italy train travel or just pay as i go?

i am going to be there for more than a month??? has anybody purchased a railpass for italy only, do you have to pay extra fees once your there to ride certain trains?

1. the rail pass will always be cheaper. if you are only going to travel in Italy definetevly the pass is the best option. (there are no extra fees in fact you could ride for free if the inspector doesn't catch you) you just get into the train and show your ticket once you are on your way. if you buy tickets individually it will cost you way to much especially if you use the fast trains you can check out these web pages to check prices: www.eurail.com or www.raileurope.com good luck!!
2. Hello, It is always cheaper to buy point to point tickets in Italy. Check out the trenitalia website for prices. I go to Italy all the time and would never waste money on a rail pass. You can often times save a lot of money with the point to point tickets. You dont say where you are going in Italy but if you are going from Rome to Venice you will pay 45 euros. Most trains can be booked the same day but to take advantage of the discounts like the amica fare you need to buy them at least 24 hours in advance. Your best bet is to compare the point to point price with the rail pass price to see which is better suited for you. Donna
3. Donna is very close to correct. The point to point tickets are usually cheaper, but not always. You may save with the rail pass if you're doing a lot of long distance travel. Trains like the Eurostars and some intercity trains (i.e., the faster trains) that require mandatory reservations will require that you pay an additional supplement. The night trains also require a supplement for a berth. I've lived in Italy and use the trains to get around the country.
