Why Italy

What is the best way to travel from Rome/Italy to Athens using a eurail pass?

My partner and I have a global eurail pass for 2 months of travel through europe. We are hoping to use this pass to get to Athens and then back up to other places such as Budapest, Germany etc. We are wondering what is the best way to get to see Athens using our eurail pass, rather than adding extra costs by flying. Also where is the best place to leave from in Italy to get to Athens? thanks...

  1. Go from Rome/Venice to Budapest via train, then fly to Athens. Get Ryanair for cheap airfare too.
  2. Take the train from Roma to Bari, then the night ferry from Bari to Patras, then a train from Patras to Athens. Like Roma to Bari is 13:38 dep/arr. 18:15. Then get from Bari train station to the port, and the ferry to Patras departs at 20:00, arrive 12:30 next day on Superfast Ferries. Read the details of your Eurail pass to see if the ferry is included or only discounted. From Patras to Athens there's a train at 17:07 dep/arr. 19:20 with a change at "Eleon Int. stop" at 18:03 pm arr./dep. 18:13
