Where is the closest, and best place to try and ski the alps, traveling from Rome, Italy?
I am a student traveling from the U.S. this coming January. I have never been to Europe but would love to ski the Alps. I will be in Rome and would like to travel somewhere to ski over a weekend. Any suggestions?

- Look for the snow
- In South Tyrolia/Alto Adige are lots of ski resorts. You can take the train from Rome to Bolzano/Bozen (www.trenitalia.it) or to one of the towns furter up in direction Innsbruck/Austria. Maybe Trenitalia (state RR) have some package offers too. Contact the Italian turist office in the US in advance. Local tour operators might offer skiing trips by bus too. But this you have to find out locally in Rome (newspapers).
- Rome is quite far from the Alps, you will have 6-7 hours of train or bus to get to the ski resorts i the Alps. The following links is italian but you can see all the places where you can go skiing in Italy. http://www.primitaly.it/montagna/index.html http://www.neveitalia.it/ski/ This website is better and you have the info in english too: http://www.skibook.it/index.htm http://www.skiinfo.it/index.jsp?CSL=en
- ski at Torino is very nice... kinda far to get to but very nice... worth the distance.....have fun!!!!
- on the Dolomiti. Val Badia, or... Plan de Corones
- Rome is pretty far, but you can try to get to Torino or Cortina d'Ampezzo - both are ski towns that have hosted the Olympics. Cortina is a really charming town in the Dolomites that has some great ski runs.
