How much money for 12 tickets from Des Moines, Iowa to Rome, Italy?

I am thinking about going on a family vacation to my hometown, Rome, Italy. I was wondering if anyone knew the price of the tickets to get there.

1. About the cheapest I see right now for the end of the month is $1404 per person for adult fares on Continental. The routing is a bit strange, but direct flights are the most expensive right now. This is flying on Tuesdays Des Moines to Houston to Newark to Rome. The return has connections in Newark and Cleveland.
