Why Italy

Things to do within 2 hour drive or train of Venice Italy?

My wife and I will be Venice Italy for a conference. We have already done most of the tourist attractions in Venice during previous travel. We are now looking for things to do in the surrounding areas. We'll have about 2 days for fun. Do anyone have any suggestions? A friend has suggested we take a train to Verona. We've also heard this area has a wine region. We would prefer to get around by train but are open to renting a car. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thank you.

  1. I'm pretty sure that Lake Como and Verona are both close enough to fit your bill. You can check out the old really expensive villas in Lake Como, take a boat out on the lake for a different perspective, and in Verona, you can visit the house that is reputed to be Juliet's house...There's tons to do, we watch a lot of travel shows, and Rick Steves and Samantha Brown have both done the region. You could find their tapes for ideas.
  2. Hi, I lived in the town of Vicenza which is mid-way between Verona and Venice. Vicenza is a wonderful old town with the first indoor theater designed by Palladio also the Rotunda designed by Palladio and used by T. Jefferson as a model for his him is outside Vicenza. Suova vineyards are outside of Vicenza also. I hate to tell one of the other posters by Romeo and Juliet never exsisted but Verona will certainly be happy to tell you where their homes were. There is a wonderful open air opera house in Verona, where you can drink your own bottle of wine while you listen to opera. Have a wonderful time, I envy you.
  3. I just got back from Venice and Verona 5 days ago. Take the Euro train, (34 Euros total for both) over to Verona, 1 1/2 trip. You probably saw the train station there at Venice. Go to the city center, the roman theater, city square and all. There is alot to see and do there in one small area. We liked it much more than Venice, not near as much walking also. The last James Bond movie was shot there, not the new one just released. I did not go to the lake but a few miles outside of Verona is suppose to be a nice lake area, if your into that scenary. You can locate it on Google Earth.
  4. Lake Como is at least 3 and a half hours from Venice by train, but Lago Garda is within two hours. You can take the train to Peschiera del Garda or Desenzano - both nice towns. You can take the boat to Sirmione. There's a large Roman ruin, and a nice castle. Verona is definitely worth a visit. I live about an hour south of there and visit often. The old town is walking distance from the train station. There are often interesting exhibits in the castle. The old roman ampitheater is a great place to see an opera in the evenings during the summer. There are often interesting things going on in town. Padova is about a half hour from Venice and is another place worth a visit. Ferrara is another interesting place with a good castle. If you're there toward the end of May when the Palio is going on, it's especially good. Groups from all the neighborhoods gather in the castle and parade in medieval costume to the park where the races are held. Vicenza is another excellent stop on the train line. If you're here on the 19th of July, the Il Redentore festival will be in Venice. The fireworks over the lagoon that night are spectacular.
