Why Italy

Best Way to Pick Up Italian language?

Hi, so I'm taking Italian at the moment and I'm learning the language fairly well but I would like to speak and understand it better. What would you recommend me doing in my free time so that I can better pick up the language? (like if I should watch movies in Italian or something of that nature).

  1. Well, that's one way. But batting your eyelashes might attract Italians faster... oops! i just read the detailed question - I misunderstood - ne-ver mind :)
  2. Well, when I was taking it at the University, I did do just that: i rented a lot of italian movies, and tried to watch them and understand them without reading the english captions. In fact, I often turned on the Italian captions, so I could read what I was listening. It was sometimes hard to find a movie without dialect, but I watched so many, that I finally improved greatly.
  3. I don't know if this is a good answer or not but here's how i learned Italian. My grandma used to watch Italian shows and I started watching them too. I learned Italian that way only that at the bottom of the TV it translated the Italian words in English.
  4. well it's not italian, but im learning french and this is what i do. i watch as many french movies as i can get my hands on (i vary the subtitle options, sometimes none, sometimes in english and sometimes in french). i also listen to french bands and read french magazines without a dictionary. this doesnt really teach me much but i now find that i keep wanting to say something in french instead of english. they say immersion is the best way to learn a language so if you can't go to italy, bring italy to you!
  5. Movies are hard to follow when you start out, even with subtitles. Watch Italian language new shows on TV or Internet (RAI). You will already be familiar with the top news stories in the world news, which will help you follow the language. Much of the vocabulary will be international words and words of frequent usage. You won't encounter much slang but you will also not encounter the many practical words you need in daily life (tools, part of the auto, culinary terms, etc.). Also try reading the news on ansa.it. This site has short stories in reasonably easy Italian. Don't worry if you cannot follow the political news or the latest scandals.
  6. For me was the opposite cause I'm Italian and i came to Canada and my English was very very poor (even now). I start watch movies, serial TV any kind of program now it's better but still improve so if you want to contact me i can speak with you in italian. Bye
