Are European based airlines as safe as US-based airlines?

This summer I am going on a tour in Italy and my travel agent booked us on a non-stop flight on the Italian airline called Alitalia. Is this airline as safe as an American airline like US Air or United Airlines? Have they had more or less crashes and accidents?

1. ITALIAN airlines are much better than Americans. And bring lots of money for best fashion.
2. European airlines IMO are much better than American airlines. Alitalia is very good. I wouldn't worry about the travel. Enjoy Italy! Ciao!
3. Alitalia is an extremely safe airline. You would not have to worry about them. European and US airlines are generally all pretty safe. Alitalia has not had as many accidents as some US airlines partially they have less flights than many of the US airlines.
4. Where do you think you're going to? Some backward country? That is extremely offensive to italians in particular (Alitalia is the nation's airline) and europeans in general. It's because of stupid arrogant and xenophobic attitudes like that that americans are not welcome anywhere in the world they go. Please don't come to Europe, we don't want ignorant americans like you over here.
