I need to find an Italian or English art song...help!?
I have a music audition in 6 weeks, and they want 2 songs of "artistic merit." An early Italian or English art song would be lovely. They will also allow 1 musical theatre selection. Though I have never had a voice lesson, I have participated in All-State Choirs and an All-Eastern ensemble. Please help; I know absolutely nothing about solo literature!

- If you have an audition - and it sound like you DO NOT HAVE a private teacher - then you have a LOT of scurrying to do! Go to www.jwpepper.com and find an anthology of Italian arts songs. Something like Caro Mio Ben would be fine. Or the Althouse collection for young singers that has Santa Lucia in it (Neapolitan folk song, not really and Italian art song, but famous). Other good beginning Italian selections are O Cessate Di Piargarmi, and Nina. For your English selection, you can do Passing By, Salley Gardens, or other songs that will appear in the collectioins in whcih you find those 2. I STRONGLY suggest that you immediately find a private voice teacher. They cannot work miracles, but they sure can help you find the best literature for YOU, and help with any vocal problems you have. I sincerely hope that this is NOT a college audition - you will be up against people with many years of training and many vocal competitions under their belts. I should know - U have taught vocal music since 1971, and am a competition judge in NY. Good luck with your audition, and PICK UP THAT PHONE!!!!!!!
