Why Italy

Going to Cannes in March...should I also go to Italy (Venice, Florence, Rome) or France and London?

My sister and I have a 4 night stay pre-booked for Cannes from March 20-24 (she's 30, I'm 25). We have til March 31 to explore another place in Europe (about 7 add'l days). We were planning to take the train and do a country-wide tour of Italy, hitting Venice, Florence, and Rome (each for about 2 nights, on our own- no tour groups). Now, we're wondering if it would be better to do a trip through France instead, with a stop in London. Is there anything of interest in cities outside of Paris? My thinking is we may not go to that area of Europe for a while, so it'd be good to take this chance to visit Italy. It's more likely we'll get to London/Paris before we can go to Italy (I've been to London before, sis hasn't). What's a better itinerary, taking in traveling time/mode/costs? Is anything going on in Italy or France in the end of March that will make it worth a visit? We can also arrive in one airport and depart from another. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

  1. While I haven't been to Paris, I have been to France and London. I have also been to Florence and Rome but not to Venice. That is the one place I wished that I did go! Personally if I had the choice again, I would go back to Italy. I loved the culture, the architect and the food. I really loved it there. I would perhaps be a poor person to ask about costs and all since it was 20 years since I have been there. At that time we just went by car since my husband was stationed in Sicilly so we drove everywhere. Rome airport was just a little bit frightening to me since there were guards there with machine guns and I arrived alone. European clothing is very expensive. I will also tell you to ask for bottled water where ever you go and hang onto your pocket book. We also were stationed just 60 miles NE of London and we loved it ! Going to an Abbey or going to Cambridge would be a good trip. If you miss the Gondolas of Venice, you can do that in Cambridge on the river. A medievel dinner is fun to go to if you can find one going on. We went to one and dressed in costume to fit in, drank mead and ate with our fingers. lol It was a fun night! Starlight Express was a good show and we saw the musical Cats, but you can see cats in the US. There is just so much to do and see. Enjoy! Wish I were going with you!
  2. I would opt for Venice or Rome, anywhere but France. Been there and they really still dislike the Americans, are very rude, pretend they don't understand English,i.e. elevator operator did that to us even when we held up 3 fingers indicating the 3rd floor and this was far from being an isolated incident. It does have great historical places to experience however so if you can take the bad with the good, it would be ok. travel Agencies might know of events at those palces in March and would not charge you for the info, just call them. London was a joy for sight seeing and the people were great and very helpful. Would love to go back there to take more time to visit and get off the beaten tourist traps and really explore on your own -many excellent guide books even to out of way places. Check your bookstore or go on the web and search for the Berlitz guidebooks to coutnries you are interested in-they tell you eveything you could ever want to know with information and maps of any place you'd llike to visit and gives sugesstions and details. I highly recommend it. You can't beat Rome for ancient historical sites but watch your purses we have been told., sad to say.
  3. Italy or Repubblica Italiana or Italia is a country in Southern Europe. Italy is nicknamed as “Boot” because of its boot like geographical shape. Italy is a peninsula extending into the central Mediterranean Sea, northeast of Tunisia. The independent countries of San Marino and the Vatican City are located within the Italian territory. Italy shares its northern alpine boundary with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. Italian is the official language, and the Eternal City-Rome is the capital and the largest city of Italy..........need for more information click link below .
