Was Venice, Italy built in the ocean or in a flood plain that eventually flooded?
My husband and I were talking about Venice and we would like to know where it was built and why? We live near the Mississippi River and see home built on stilts since the flood of '93. Is that what happened with Venice?

- Venice was originally build on a bunch of small islands.
- No. It got flooded as years went by, plus the fact that it is built near canals.
- Venice was built on a series of islands in the middle of a huge marsh called the Venetian Lagoon. About 600 years ago, Venetians diverted the flow of all major rivers into the lagoon to help ward of land attacks creating an even deeper lagoon environment. This accentuated the now famous canals of Venice. That, and the fact that the sea levels are rising, has led to growing concern that many of Venice's historic buildings are in danger of succumbing to the water.
