Why Italy

Any good restaurants in Florence, Italy, especially around the Duomo, for locals rather than tourists?

I've been to Florence a few times before, but this time I'd like to eat in places that the locals eat. I'll be in back at the beginning of February and would like to eat GOOD food at a reasonable price in both of these areas. If you have any suggestions, please briefly describe the type of food and experience. Thanks.

  1. Yes. I used to live there. My favorite one was Trattoria Anita, not far from the Duomo, right by Piazza della Signoria. Via Vinegia 16/r - closed Sunday. Locals also eat in Palle D'Oro - it's in Mercato San Lorenzo, but I forget the address. Just ask a merchant. They're really nice. Il Giardino di Barbano is a good pizza place. It's a little further away from the Duomo, but a little walking never killed anyone. Piazza Independenza 3 r. Closed Wednesday. It will probably take you 15-20 minutes to walk there. In Piazza Porcellino, there are a few good places, but I can't recall the names. Ask one of the guys who sells, like Alessandro Meucci. Buy a scarf from him - he has nice pashmina ones, for a killer price. Tell him the Romanian girl from Chicago send you and she said hi. I used to work close to him. (Just a tip - in Italy, in the markets, you always catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Never insult the merchandise and always politely ask for a discount - a "sconto".) Have fun, and have a slice of pizza with tomatoes, garlic and ruccola (arugula) for me. ;-)
