- The war started in Italy because they allied themselves with Nazi Germany. Eventually the Americans would take back Sicily and Southern Italy in 1943. The Sicily campaign was masterminded by legendary general Patton. As far as the camps, they were liberated from 43-45 by the Allies (The Americans among them). I don't believe it is ever mentioned in the movie which camp the characters are at, but I would imagine the most famous camp liberated by the US was Dachau. But when the other famous camp Auschwitz was liberated by the soviets, the Germans tried to destroy it (as in the movie). Perhaps the camp was mix of those two?
- The location of the the camp in the movie was not in Italy but by somewhere abroad, where the jews were deported from all the Countries all around Germany, here included Italy. However Italy has indeed been liberated with the decisive contribute of the U.S. together with Great Britain's Army (Anglo-american Army). The war started in Italy on June 10th,1940 with the declaration of war to both France and Great Britain. On Sept.3rd, 1943 (announced 5 days later) the Italian Gouvernment in charge signs the armistice with the anglo-americans. On Oct.11,1943 Italy declares the war to their previous allied Country, the Germany. on Oct.16th, 1943 the German troops begin to arrest and deport ten of thousands of Italian jews (here comes the movie....) June 4th, 1944 - The Anglo-american Army frees Rome and 6 days later also Florence is liberated. April 29th, 1945 dates the complete capitulation of the ennemy's forces. May 2nd, 1945 is the official date of the cessation of any militar operation in Italy and hence is the end of the WW II in Italy. Edit # 1 -In the movie there are no evidences on the camp's name even if mostly are saying it's Auschwitz (that's located in Poland)but it must be told that Americans didn't liberate the Auschwitz's camp (Russian Army did it). Benigni (the author of the story and film's director) has never revealed if it's true or not because I guess he didn't mean to represent an existent camp, just a fancy one.
- Do you think you can include British and Commonwealth forces that invaded Sicily please? WW2 was not a solely US affair. The US didn't arrive in North African until 1942 - we had been there for some time having the hell beaten out of us. Hence our 8th Army was called The Deserts Rats (and still are), because the only shelter they had was holes in the ground as they were bombed night and day by Rommel's Afrika Corps. The War turned in the allies favour by the defeat of Rommel at El Alemain under Field Marshal Mongomery. - The US were not involved in this battle at all. From that moment on Sicily became the target as the planned invasion of Italy.
- No, the war started in Poland, when the Nazis faked an invasion from Poland and used it as a pretext to invade Poland. Then those idiots from Britain and France Finlay decided to stop adolfie and declared war. Too little, too late. Later Adolfie invaded France. The British were lucky he couldn't invade them. The old Churchill stopped them. The British said that Churchill was an alarmist and an exaggerate until adolfie invade Poland. Then ( almost too late ) they realized that he was right The war ended in Germany, in the 7 - 8 may 1945. What happened in Italy was that Mussolini was deposed and shot. Then the Germans occupied Italy and the Allies had to take it. About the Jews and the camps there were many
