Why Italy

Present for a college-age man traveling to Florence, Italy?

My 21 year old, male cousin is traveling to Florence with his University right after the holidays and my family needs gift ideas for things he can use for/on his trip. Any suggestions?

  1. money
  2. a good travel wallet or bag. something that is secure and protects against the many pickpocketers there. or iget rick steves or lonely planet florence book.
  3. How about a really nice digital camera, with a couple extra gigs of memory, too.
  4. +A leather bound journal. +A few pocket sized Moleskines & a Mont Blanc fountian pen(with a few boxes of cartriges) +A silk & wool scarf +A wool berret +A pair of Persol sunglasses +$100.00 worth of international calling cards +A woolen sports blazer + A copy of "A Farewell to Arms"
  5. Of course cold hard cash, he won't have enough. A really good pair of waterproof hiking boots. A nice pair of shoes for dinners. A warm waterproof, thin coat. A nice coat for dinners out. Chino's (LL Bean has some that are lined in flannel), you can't go everywhere in jeans A book called "Let's Go Italy" A warm hat, scarf and gloves Dark slacks and at least a button up for dinners. Some restaurants require that men wear a dinner jacket. An iron (no hotel we went to had an iron we ended up having to buy one, and he's probably going to be in hostels) A converter for outlets If he's flying Alitalia a lot of entertainment for the journey. It is a horrible airline, tiny seats, terrible food, the headsets don't work to watch outdated blurry movies assuming you can see it from your seat.
  6. - opera glasses to admire frescos, ceilings, and architectures; - a copy of "My journey in Italy" by W. J. Goethe to read on airplane (a real masterpiece for educated travellers); - a small FM radio to listen to italian music on italian radio stations;
  7. Scarf; gloves & brolly.
