can anyone tell me some general phrases to help me pick up an italian guy... im learning italian and the phrase tapes dont have this type of information... i would like to know how to ask/say are u single? or are u seeing someone? what are u doing this weekend...? want to do something together - or with me...? you have really nice hair! i love your shirt or top i'm single i have been single too long... and anything else u may find useful... best answer goes to the phrase that gets me a date! thanksssss and what about saying " i had a dream about u last night.. you were fun" does anyone know how to say the same in russian!? lol i duno who to choose for the best answer... everyone has been really good HOWEVER im not getting many addtional phrases except as stated the killer phrase "you know what... you look sexy" so come on people HUSTLE... get them phrases in and hurry! xx

Absolutley don't use the first answer!!!! I'm Italian, I'll give you the right translation now: are you single? --> Sei single? (or) are you seeing someone? --> (o) frequenti qualcuno? what are you doing this weekend? --> che fai questo weekend? want to do something together/with me? --> ti va di fare qualcosa insieme/con me? (also: ti va di uscire con me?, that would mean : do you wat to go out with me?) you have really nice hair! --> hai dei capelli bellissimi! I love your shirt/top --> mi piace la tua maglietta/il tuo top I'm single --> sono single I have been single too long --> sono single da troppo tempo... That's it, now my suggestions come: you could tell her that you love the way she smells : hai un buon profumo you have beautiful eyes: hai dei bellissimi occhi you know, I love hearing you talk about yourself: sai, mi piace sentirti parlare e raccontare di te Those are the things that I like to hear from a man, of course there are many others but I don't know your taste. Disregard all the answers except the ones by Chiara and Mars. (Good advice by Answerer #2.) Mars, just a little correction: you have really nice hair!- hai dei bei capelli or mi piacono i tuoi capelli: "piacono" is wrong. It should be "piacciono". Bravo Cosimo! I agree with you 100%! I wish people would refrain from answering when they know nothing about the topic and please stop using online translators. Most of the time, they work well for single words but are definitely useless for whole sentences. Cosimo, one more thing, you forgot to translate "in bocca al lupo". If someone tries to translate that with one of those "wonderful" online translators, they will come up with "in the mouth of the wolf"! So, I'll do it for you: "In bocca al lupo" means: good luck!
Susananita has summed up the situation for you just right: Chiara's answer is exactly correct. If you used the first or second answers, you would make a fool of yourself - "faresti brutta figura" - in front of this guy and then you would stand no chance, because "una brutta figura" is something that Italian people instinctively reject. Just to confirm - in case you think it looks a bit odd - that the normal word for "single" in today's Italian is indeed "single", pronounced as in English. It's one of the dozens of common English loan-words in Italian. The only real alternative to "single" is "solo" (not "singolo") ... but "single" is by far the most common. I find it most annoying that there are so many answerers around who won't think twice about answering a question that they have completely insufficient knowledge to answer ... it wastes everybody's time, and the only way people can possibly know which answers are right and which are absolutely wrong is if people like RussianCatSima and Susananita are good enough to take the time to say so. Hats off to them. I can't answer if I don't contribute something new, so here's a really killer phrase for you ... "Ma sai, tu sei proprio figo!" - which loosely translates as "You know what ... you are really tasty!" The only slight problem with all this, is that if you start coming out with all these great colloquial phrases, he might well assume you know much more Italian than you really do ... which could leave you looking like a bit of a spare part when he shoots right back at you with something completely incomprehensible. Sure, it's worth a try ... but there is no substitute for a really sound competence in the basics of the language before you attempt the more ambitious colloquial register. At the moment, if you don't have the knowledge you need to sustain a conversation in Italian, a pick-up line could prove to be a bit of a dead end. Good luck anyway, or as we say ...
