Why Italy

Will Italy let me into the country without a departure date?!?

I purchased a 1 way ticket that I got for a really good deal, however I have heard that Italy won't let me in without a ticket set for a departure date. Unfortunately I can't return my ticket and it's about an extra $600 to get another 1 way ticket back. Has anyone been thre recently or can help me out with this PLEASE? Thanks!

  1. I believe you need a return ticket or a "forward ticket" meaning a ticket to go elsewhere. This ticket can be a train or bus ticket, as long as you leave italy. Here's the official entry requirements for Italy: Passport/Visa Note: The borderless region known as the Schengen area includes the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. All these countries issue a standard Schengen visa that allows the holder, in principal, to travel freely within the borders of all. Travellers are advised to have a return or onward ticket plus all documents required for their next destination, and sufficient funds to cover period of intended stay in Italy.
  2. All countries, including Italy (and the U.S.), require you to have an "onward or return ticket" or they won't let you in. You won't even be allowed to board the flight. You can't just fly into their country and disappear into the population. Now you are either going to have to buy another one way ticket which is going to cost you an arm and a leg - or lose the money you paid for the ticket. It is always a good idea to thoroughly check everything out before you make such an outlay of money.
  3. You need a return ticket for getting back home anyway so what's the problem? You will not get a visa if you don't have the return ticket (but maybe you don't need the visa, where are you from?).
  4. It depends where are you from, your citizenship and the reason for your entry in Italy; for instance if you're an American citizen, you don't even need a visa. But look here http://www.esteri.it/visti/home_eng.asp (Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs official site) and choose what apply for you.
  5. If you are from UE that's is not a problem. ciao.
