Train travel in Italy - from Milan to Grosseto? I am arriving in Milan, Italy (Malpensa) via Amsterdam at 11:25am. I need to get from Milan to Grosseto & have been told that the train would be an easy and economical way to get there. I am trying to figure out which would be the best train to take from the below options: Depart 2:00pm from Milano Cantrale Arrive 4:39pm Firenze Rifredi Depart 5:16pm Firenze Rifredi Arrive 8:09pm Grosetto OR Depart 3:10pm Milan Centrale Arrive 4:42pm Genova Piazza Depart 4:52pm Genova Piazza Arrive 8:32pm Grosseto I have been told that Malpensa is more than an hour away from train station in Milan so I would also be interested in knowing advice on best way to get from airport to train station. Will I have enough time for bag retrieval, immigration, travel time, etc to make 2:00pm train? I also have been told that Florence train station is smaller and easier to manage (vs Genova) and therefore will be easier to navigate with luggage, etc. Any addtl info would be appreciated! THANKS
Question about train travel in Italy? My fiance and I will be travelling to Italy for our Honeymoon in June. We will be travelling from Rome to Florence, Florence to Venice, Venice to Sorrento and Sorrento to Rome, all on different days. We have looked into getting a EuroRail supersaver pass that entitles us to 3 days of unlimited travel, also purchasing an extra day. Altogether this will run about $450. Is this the best, most cost effective way to travel? Their website is difficult to understand, do we still need to pay extra for tickets? How do we know if we need reservations?
Italy - What is the least expensive way to travel? I plan to travel to Italy in the next year or two. What is the least expensive way to get there from the Maine? I have a friend that is traveling to Ireland next month and she is leaving out of New York on the Queen Mary 2 and then is taking trains and a ferry to reach her final destination. Has anyone ever traveled via ship as opposed to plane across the Atlantic? Based on what she told me the tickets on the ship are not as expensive as one would think. Thoughts, advice????
Should I get a eurail pass to travel around Italy on a budget? If yes, which pass? I am just visiting Nice in France and want to go from Nice to Venice by train. After that travel around Italy on train. Have a tight budget. Should I get a eurail pass or get seperate destination tickets? In Italy I intend to use the train for Venice-Florence, Florence-Pisa-Florence, Florence-Siena-Florence and Florence-Rome. Could I get cheap tickets between these places if I dont have a eurail pass. Also, in Nice, will want to make a day trips to Monte Carlo and Cannes. I am already above the age of a student pass and travelling with a partner. Will it be cheaper to go with on the spot bookings of train tickets or with a pass? Thanks for all suggestions!
Things to do within 2 hour drive or train of Venice Italy? My wife and I will be Venice Italy for a conference. We have already done most of the tourist attractions in Venice during previous travel. We are now looking for things to do in the surrounding areas. We'll have about 2 days for fun. Do anyone have any suggestions? A friend has suggested we take a train to Verona. We've also heard this area has a wine region. We would prefer to get around by train but are open to renting a car. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thank you.
How can I travel from Florence (Italy) to Serre di Rapolano (~35km from Siena)? Is there train/bus combo? I'm arriving at the Florence (Italy) airport next July, and wondering if there is a way to get to Serre di Rapolano (SdR) from there (SdR is about 35km east southeast from Siena). Would I take a train or bus to Siena, and go from there to SdR, or should I travel via Perugia or some other route? Should I just take a taxi from Siena or some other spot if no public transport is available? If you have any specific info on train numbers/routes or bus routes and costs, it would help too. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Best train travel options through Europe? I'm planning a 6-week trip to Europe starting in England and ending up in Italy. I want to visit a lot of the countries in between either to major cities or small towns. I'm wanting to know what the cheapest and best deal is for train travel. Should I get a railpass, a eurailpass, or buy point to point tickets? I'm also not sure of how many days I plan on traveling around or how many days that are going to be required to do that much traveling. I don't and probably won't have plans set in stone as I plan on going wherever whenever I feel like it. I'm 23 so I fall within the cheaper price range. Please give me your suggestions. im looking specifically for train travel...not plane travel even if its cheaper
Do train stations in Italy take credit cards and are internet cafes still popular? I'm going to travel by train in Belgium and Italy and just wondering if I can pay with a credit card? I didn't book my tickets on line so I can decide on the spot where to go next. Also, I know that there are many places with wifi available, but are there still internet cafes with computers around? I'll be in cities, mainly. I thank each one of you for your answers and your time. You are a wonderful, helpful community!

We plan to cover Rome, Florence and Venice. Hence our travel will include Tram/Metro travel within these cities as well as intercity train travel between Rome - Florence and Florence - Venice. Question - travel Italy by rail? I'm going to Italy and will traveling within the country by rail (train). I need to buy a pass, but I see different options/websites. What is the difference between getting a pass from Trenitalia, Eurail, and any other companies? And don't they all use the same tracks anyway?
Train System in Italy-How To Get Around? While in Italy I will be traveling: *From Rome --> To Florence *From Florence --> To Cinque Terre *From Cinque Terre --> To Venice I will also be traveling around within the cities. Travel passes for Italy? I am planning to visit Italy as a tourist. My plan includes staying in Rome. Then travelling to Pisa and then finally travel to Venice from Pisa. As you can understand this would involve a lot of travel within the cities (by either bus or Metro) and also intercity travels, preferrably by Trains. Can you please suggest if there is any all inclusive travel pass that i can use for this purpose. I am aware of a Euro rail pass, but that is not the kind of thing i am looking for. I need one combined pass that would enable me to trabvel both within city as well as intercity. I have travelled in Switzerland and have used a pass like this. It is normally valid for 4 days and enables you to travel all kinds of transport. There is also a discount in special transport tickets in site seeing location. Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated.
European Train Travel Question? I am going to Italy for a 2 month study abroad program this summer. I would like to also travel to Spain and Holland during the program for short weekend visits (say 4 or 5 visits over the 2 months). My question is--Is it cheapest to get a Eurail pass? I have heard that many people claim that the Eurail pass is more expensive that actually paying for the tickets at the station individually. Additionally, if it is not cheaper what would a ticket cost from Florence to Amsterdam and Florence to Madrid roundtrip?
Travelling from Istanbul to Italy? Is there anyone who knows whether what are the mode of transportation I can take to travel from Istanbul to Italy? Is it cheaper to fly or to take the train? Is there any train that travels to Italy?
trip with bicycle and train in Italy? I'm looking for maps and decent guidebooks or websites that can help me plan my trip to Italy. I'll be flying to Palermo on May 8th. From Palermo I intend to make my way up north to Venice, stopping in Florence and Rome on the way. I'll be travelling with tent, sleeping bag, cooking stove and a bicycle. For longer distances I intend to take the train, but for my way to and from the camping sites I intend to use my bike. Are there any good maps for the bigger cities and the surrounding areas? Bike-friendly? Maybe a set of maps specifically designed for bike travel? All the maps I found are designed with car drivers in mind, they often give neither railway stations nor height lines. The few maps for bikers were too detailed for me, as they focused on only one region - and I want the whole of Italy. Any links on cycling in Italy? Where should I look/ask? For example, I know that there is a camping site not far from Palermo airport. How do I get there by bike after landing?
Planning to travel to Italy? My husband and I are planning to go to Italy next JAN or FEB with another couple. I was wondering if you knew any affordable travel sites for self drive vacations. Last yr we went to Ireland w/ air, car and b &B's for one week was about $700 a person. I was hoping to find something around that price range. I've looked on all the regular sites (travelocity, expedia, priceline, etc) and they don't really have what I'm looking for. Air, and lodging (either b & b's or hotel or whatever) and I don't know about a car b/c someone said its real easy to get around with the train. So I don't know if we should forget the car altogether or rent a car. I guess I'm looking for any advice and tips I can get. And how soon should I book? For Ireland we booked a yr in advance and I'd like to do that this time, but only if I find a good deal. Thanks so much!

Italy-Vienna Trenitalia international train help!? I'm going from Vienna to Florence roundtrip. My travel agent wants to sell me a Eurail pass, but from the Trenitalia (Italy rail), it seems much cheaper to buy point-to-point tickets. But I can't get point-to-point reservations on internat'l trains here in US. Or can I? Any suggestions? Ann Responses have been great. Looks like the best bet is to use Rail Europe for one way to Vienna-Florence and then get the return ticket in Florence. Or is that a bad idea? Ann
