Advice about Italy - travel time between Florence/Rome/Venice - costs - where to go, what to see, etc.? I am going on a week long trip to Italy with my boyfriend & his family next summer. We're considering staying in Florence, & making a couple day trips to Rome and Venice depending on how far away they are. Questions: what's the estimated travel time between Florence & Rome, & Florence & Venice? Best way to travel between cities, and appx. cost? How will the weather be in June/July? If you live in or have been to Italy, what are some good local spots to site see and/or eat at that might not be crawling with tourists? ANY advice about costs, food, what to wear, where to go, etc. will be greatly appreciated!!!

Italy-- Turino or Vertibo, Travel/study abroad to turino or vertibo? Italians, Study Abroad, Italy Trip....? This summer I am going to study abroad for about 7 weeks. I want to travel to Italy and the 2 places that are offered by my school are Turino, Italy and Vertibo, Italy. I really am not familiar with these places, so I was hoping I could get some suggestions, or hopefully some people's experiences from either or both. The only thing I do know about these two places are that the Olympics were once in Turino, and Vertibo, is right outside of Rome, about an hour away. My school does not offer Sicily, Rome, Florence, Naples, etc. I am still looking forward to going and living there for about 2 months! I hope that you all can help. If not, share an experience you had about your study abroad and give me some travelling tips! I will be taking accredited classes. The University in Turino is the 4th best university in Italy. But anyway, the bottom line is....Turino or Vertibo? It's a difficult decision, and I have to make my decision this week. Hope you can help! Thank you.
Travel tips for Southern Italy and Sicily...Possibly getting married there also? My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Southern Italy (Rome, Naples, Capri, Palermo etc) including Sicily in March or April of 2008. We have never been to Italy and we plan to go for 10 day (not including the travel days to and from). We know that we need to do a tour or we would never see the things we want to see but we don't want to be restricted to eating with the people on the tour and staying in the hotels they stay in. Basically, I would like to know if anyone has taken a trip to Italy where you basically set up the sightseeing tours only, you can eat where you want and stay where you want but they set up transportation to and tours of sight of interest. We want to stay at the nicest places and have freedom to eat where you want, are there any companies that allow you to do this. We are also thinking of getting married in Sicily, he has some family there (whom he has never met, but are very receptive to our coming). We would basically be eloping(just the 2 of us, no one knows) we want a Catholic ceremony then when we come home we would have a nice Civil Ceremony for just close family and friends (he works for a judge so he would perform the wedding). Is this possible and if anyone has done this please let me know. We would also like to start off in Sicily b/c that is where my bf wants to get married and then the rest of the trip will be our honeymoon, is this possible. Any info will be appreciated, especially from those who have traveled southern Italy and/or American citizens who have had a Catholic wedding there. Thanks for the advice Pearl, but I am Catholic hence, the reason I wanted a catholic ceremony, and have made my sacriments (baptism and confirmation)

Travel to Italy..? A friend and I are looking to go to Italy probably in the summer of 2009, but we really have no idea how far in advance we should book, what travel agency to use, etc. We are are in our mid-30's and would like to travel with the same age group (ages no higher than 45), anybody know of a compatible tour group? I have searched on-line but can't really find what I am looking for. Thanks in advance for any info!
Question about train travel in Italy? My fiance and I will be travelling to Italy for our Honeymoon in June. We will be travelling from Rome to Florence, Florence to Venice, Venice to Sorrento and Sorrento to Rome, all on different days. We have looked into getting a EuroRail supersaver pass that entitles us to 3 days of unlimited travel, also purchasing an extra day. Altogether this will run about $450. Is this the best, most cost effective way to travel? Their website is difficult to understand, do we still need to pay extra for tickets? How do we know if we need reservations?
Train travel in Italy - from Milan to Grosseto? I am arriving in Milan, Italy (Malpensa) via Amsterdam at 11:25am. I need to get from Milan to Grosseto & have been told that the train would be an easy and economical way to get there. I am trying to figure out which would be the best train to take from the below options: Depart 2:00pm from Milano Cantrale Arrive 4:39pm Firenze Rifredi Depart 5:16pm Firenze Rifredi Arrive 8:09pm Grosetto OR Depart 3:10pm Milan Centrale Arrive 4:42pm Genova Piazza Depart 4:52pm Genova Piazza Arrive 8:32pm Grosseto I have been told that Malpensa is more than an hour away from train station in Milan so I would also be interested in knowing advice on best way to get from airport to train station. Will I have enough time for bag retrieval, immigration, travel time, etc to make 2:00pm train? I also have been told that Florence train station is smaller and easier to manage (vs Genova) and therefore will be easier to navigate with luggage, etc. Any addtl info would be appreciated! THANKS

Planning to travel to Italy? My husband and I are planning to go to Italy next JAN or FEB with another couple. I was wondering if you knew any affordable travel sites for self drive vacations. Last yr we went to Ireland w/ air, car and b &B's for one week was about $700 a person. I was hoping to find something around that price range. I've looked on all the regular sites (travelocity, expedia, priceline, etc) and they don't really have what I'm looking for. Air, and lodging (either b & b's or hotel or whatever) and I don't know about a car b/c someone said its real easy to get around with the train. So I don't know if we should forget the car altogether or rent a car. I guess I'm looking for any advice and tips I can get. And how soon should I book? For Ireland we booked a yr in advance and I'd like to do that this time, but only if I find a good deal. Thanks so much!

Travel through Italy? Hi, my husband and I are thinking of traveling through Italy next spring. We will have about 10 days. Spain may be something we would consider also. In your opinion, what are the most important cities/regions to see? Would we be better off going on one of those package tours or doing it on our own? We don't want to completely slum it, but can't stay at five star resorts--budget wise. Thanks for opinions!
Travel passes for Italy? I am planning to visit Italy as a tourist. My plan includes staying in Rome. Then travelling to Pisa and then finally travel to Venice from Pisa. As you can understand this would involve a lot of travel within the cities (by either bus or Metro) and also intercity travels, preferrably by Trains. Can you please suggest if there is any all inclusive travel pass that i can use for this purpose. I am aware of a Euro rail pass, but that is not the kind of thing i am looking for. I need one combined pass that would enable me to trabvel both within city as well as intercity. I have travelled in Switzerland and have used a pass like this. It is normally valid for 4 days and enables you to travel all kinds of transport. There is also a discount in special transport tickets in site seeing location. Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated.
Looking for travel tips in Italy? I'm going to italy Aug 25-Sep12. I was going to visit a friend but he decided to buy a plane ticket back home before I was going to arrive! :( Oh well. I've been all over italy, but never south of Naples. I was wondering if anyone has any good places to go? I speak conversational italian, so I'm open to going off the beaten path and figuring stuff out as I go Anyone looking for a travel partner during that time? I'm also wondering about those resorts that italians go to. I think it's the sort of thing where you go to the beach for a week and food is paid for and they have activities. Anyone know the name for those in italian?

How can I travel from Florence (Italy) to Serre di Rapolano (~35km from Siena)? Is there train/bus combo? I'm arriving at the Florence (Italy) airport next July, and wondering if there is a way to get to Serre di Rapolano (SdR) from there (SdR is about 35km east southeast from Siena). Would I take a train or bus to Siena, and go from there to SdR, or should I travel via Perugia or some other route? Should I just take a taxi from Siena or some other spot if no public transport is available? If you have any specific info on train numbers/routes or bus routes and costs, it would help too. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Travel to Italy for Holidays? Hi! I'm planning to go Italy for holidays during December. I only have about 2 weeks to spend so currently, Rome, Florence, Pisa, Venice and Milan are on my list of city-hopping. Are these cities are good enough to get a good feel for Italy? Also, i know it's going to be winter in December. Are most attractions and shops gonna be closed? Is it going to be too cold to do anything at all? Thanks people!
