How did the nation of Italy form and how did the Italian language form? Even though the regions of Italy didn't unify until the 1860s, how old is the Italian nation and how did the nation of Italy come into existence? And how doe the Italian government decide how many legal immigrants to accept per year?
When did Italy actually start to be called Italy? I am currently watching the show The Tudors (by Showtime) and have noticed that they refer to Italy as a country. I know that Italy was a kingdom as of 1861 but I wanted to know if it was actually the name of the area prior to this time or if the show is just incorrect. I know its just a TV show, I just like to know these random things. Any help?

How far in advance should I buy tickets to Italy? I'm looking to go on vacation to Italy in the Sept/Oct/Nov area and I was wondering how far in advance I should purchase plane tickets to get the best rates? How much of Italy is surrounded by a lot of water? I don't know much about Italy. However, everytime that I see photographs of Italy, I see the shopping districts surrounded by water-filled streets, that people have to always use boats to get around in. How much of Italy is surrounded by water like that? Are only the shopping areas surrounded by water, and are there many more areas of Italy that are not surrounded by those types of streets that are always full of water? If I am not mistaken, Italy might be the only country on Earth that has a shopping district/area that has streets that are always full of water. If I am wrong, what other places are like that? Furthermore, were those water-filled streets of Italy ever dry for a very long time? If yes, what caused those streets to become constantly flooded like that? Furthermore, do those streets ever become dry during any times of the year, or are they always filled with water, all year round of every year? Hopefully, some of you who live in Italy will answer these questions.

Reasons for France to support Italy against Scotland? If Ukraine defeats France, France may not qualify. 1) Scotland - Italy : tie Italy defeats Faeroe Islands Ukraine defeats France (possible especially that the match is to be played in Ukraine) 1 - Italy 27 2 - Scotland 25 3 - France 25 Both Scotland and France would have 25 points. Tiebreaker rule1 applies, teams in question: France and Scotland. Scotland has 6 pts, France 0 pts. Scotland qualifies Italy and Scotland qualify. 2) Scotland defeats Italy. Italy defeats Faeroe Islands. Ukraine defeats France. 1 - Scotland 27 2 - Italy 26 3 - France 25 Scotland and Italy qualify. 3) The only case that France officially qualifies after the Scotland - Italy match is played is if Italy wins. so, after this match: 1 - Italy 26 2 - France 25 3 - Scotland 24 So, whatever happens with with Italy and France in their final match against Faeroe Islands and Ukraine respectively, both will qualify. So, are these good reasons for France to cheer on Italy to win the match against Scotland? @ Liverpool Ukraine-France will be played on 21/11/2007 while Italy-Scotland on 17/11/2007 I know France will prepare themselves to win the match. The point is that France will be supporting Italy on 17-nov to officially qualify if Italy wins. @ elGato If Scotland wins, France will need only 1 point from Ukraine to qualify. So Italy disqualifies even if they defeat Faeroe Islands. Assume Ukraine-France: tie Scotland defeats Italy Italy defeats Faeroe Islands. 1 - Scotland 27 2 - France 26 3 - Italy 26 tiebreaker between Italy and France, France has 4 points and Italy has 1 point. France qualifies. So Italy will not take such a big risk. @Fresh Prince The same thing that made Georgia defeat Scotland, may also apply to Ukraine and France, especially that the match will be played in Ukraine. And btw this is not the point of my question. France will officially qualify on 17-nov only if Italy defeats Scotland. And this is good reason for France to support Italy. and I didn't say "definitely" @Fresh Prince yes, i already said that 1 point is sufficient for France to qualify.
Italy-- Turino or Vertibo, Travel/study abroad to turino or vertibo? Italians, Study Abroad, Italy Trip....? This summer I am going to study abroad for about 7 weeks. I want to travel to Italy and the 2 places that are offered by my school are Turino, Italy and Vertibo, Italy. I really am not familiar with these places, so I was hoping I could get some suggestions, or hopefully some people's experiences from either or both. The only thing I do know about these two places are that the Olympics were once in Turino, and Vertibo, is right outside of Rome, about an hour away. My school does not offer Sicily, Rome, Florence, Naples, etc. I am still looking forward to going and living there for about 2 months! I hope that you all can help. If not, share an experience you had about your study abroad and give me some travelling tips! I will be taking accredited classes. The University in Turino is the 4th best university in Italy. But anyway, the bottom line is....Turino or Vertibo? It's a difficult decision, and I have to make my decision this week. Hope you can help! Thank you.
going to italy soon....theres only one problem!!....???? ok heres the stitch my sister and i are in a band and they're taking a trip to italy around this time next year. the price per person was around $2,000 per person, and my parents could afford to take the whole family. (family of 5). but, a lot of people dropped out and arent going, so the price went up to $3,000. turns out, my parents not cant afford to bring the whole family, and i dont blame them! so, my mom said that if we go only one parent could go. so my sister and i were devestated obviously. BUT, my cousin in italy is getting married this summer, and my mom said that if we went, we could have our own little tour of italy (since the band was touring italy) and go to a traditional italian wedding for our cousins (which i would really really love!) so your options are: 1) going to italy with the band, but only going with one parent. 2) going to italy with the family, taking your own tour, and attending a relatives wedding. now the question is below.... which one should we go to?! my parents said it's up to my sister and i...i would really love to go with the band, but i mean i couldnt go on the other side of the world w/o 1 parent, and my little brother. but my sister was more devestated, and said she wanted to go with the band really badly. i go with option #2. what do you think? option #1 or #2???? whyy??? ok i'm not doing this to brag going to europe or anything, we have to decide this by the end of january, because we have to get payments to the band by then. this is a really hard decision! but like i would rather do #2 because we would still be touring italy and see our cousins who we only saw once when they came to the states...ughh. decisions decisions decisions.

IMPORTANT italy QUESTION please help!!!!!!? My great-grandfather came over from Italy in 1908. His name was FRANK LAVIGNA. In the town that he came from (Cercepiccola, Campobasso, Molise, Italy) , his name is still registered/recorded as a presently recorded surname. That means that his brothers/sisters who DID NOT come to America may have had children in Italy, which means that we have 3rd or 4th cousins living in Italy! I dont know how to find this out and who IS related to me in this town. Is there any ITALY WHITE PAGES where i can write a letter to a person bearing my last name?
Why Domenech hate Italy so much?? he accused Italy buy a game... he accused italy player a cheater, diver n lazy (Panucci?)... he doesn't give his player watch Italian match.. always mouning about italian tactics.. and even not pick Trazeguet for France side just because he played in italy n backing them whe Domenech accused Italy's team..(n also maybe because Trazeguet doesn't score penalty in WC Final against Italy?) why he hate Italy so much?? i think it is not just because he's France lost to Italy at WC Final..what's about ur opinion?
Going to Italy at the end of the year (November, December). Advice? I have several questions? OK, so I'm going to Italy. SO EXCITED! I am going for two/three weeks. I am learning Italian (started three weeks ago) Do you think that I will be able to speak passable/good Italian by the end of the year if I try very hard? What are "must visits" in Italy? I want to see the real Italy as well as the tourist side of Italy. What are activities that I and my family should do? Any good stories or experiences that you want to share with me? Anything!! Tell me everything! I am so excited, and cannot wait and have to book soon, so any adivce would be so helpful! Thank you so much!! PS I am Australian. Living in Italy? I think living in Italy would be a wonderful place to live. I've never been to Italy, but I plan on going someday, and maybe even living in Italy. I was wondering would an American be able to survive living in Italy, or even Vacationing there? I know that the Euro is worth more than our U.S. Dollar, so would one be able to survive with $5,000 U.S. dollars. For food, shelter, shopping, and going to events while vacationing or living in Italy. Specifically Florence, and Milan. I would not like to live in Rome such as it's such a crowded city, with MANY tourists, and I know Florence and Milan has it's share of Tourists as well. But I think living in either Florence or Milan would be a great place to live, because it's alittle more toned down compared to Rome. So any advice that would be great!
Italy Might Not Be Able To Qualify For Euro 2008, (Full Story)? Italy first games was with lithuiana, They almost lost to luthuina, they managed to tie with them. Today, France owned Italy, Italy's chances of Qualifying Dropped Dramatically, Altough theres still hope, We cannot expect much more of this Italian team. France winned the game 3-1, Italy will have to deal with goal diffrental, They are almost dead last in their group. http://www.uefa.com/Competitions/EURO/FixturesResults/Round=2241/match=83968/report=RP.html
Missing Italy.....? We were stationed in Italy from 2001-2004 and I loved every minute of it...Italy is the most beautiful country in the world. I miss it so much...my husband is currently in Iraq and will be home in about 3 months. For christmas he is taking me back to Italy for 2 weeks... We know our way around Italy as we traveled alot while we were there. We will be staying in Vicenza ... But I want to spend a few nights around Nove, does anyone know of any hotels close by? We will be staying at the Rose hotel in Latina when we go back to Roma. We are from U.S.A....I learned to speak Italian while over there so there is no language barrier..so I wouldnt need a "tourist" hotel
Did Italy spend too much money bribing refs and fixing matches that their debt rating is downgraded? Italy's debt rating is downgraded Italy's Prodi said the rating cut was an 'expected alarm bell' Italy has had its debt rating cut by Standard & Poor's and Fitch over concerns about plans to cut the state budget deficit and national debts. The move comes after Italy published its 2007 budget and many analysts complained that it did not do enough to put the country's football match fixing in order.
Does Italy have to win the World cup for people to stop calling them cheaters? I think they've shown they aren't... yes, we all know about Australia, however, Italy did win fair and square against all other teams, Including Germany. In the case of Australia,we all know with high probability that Italy would have won that game anyway... Is it really necessary for Italy to win the cup for everybody to shut up? or maybe even, are people going to shut up at all if Italy does win the cup?
Is Italy a good place to live, pls read details below? I love Italy and have my heart set on moving to Italy after university. I plan on becoming a car designer, so will prob. be working and in Turin. Recently though I have seen the huge riots in Rome on T.V, and have read about large social problems in the cities. I have also read about the presence of the Mafia, which has made Napoli an unsafe place. So, what I'm saying is, are there severe problems in Italy at the mo.? I'd probably be moving to Italy in 2010, so are these problems longterm ones. Finally I'd love to hear from anyone who's lived in Turin
Is Italy a Police State? I lived in Italy for five years and was repeatly horrified by the brutality of the police there. Italy is a member of the EU and I am shocked that such behavoir is allowed to continue. Whenever this matter is mentioned to higher authorities in the EU they simply say that police brutality in Italy is not within their remit. If the police in the UK acted the same way there would be hell to pay. Why is it not the same in Italy?
Modesty in Italy? When I'm eighteen, I'm going to Italy for one whole year as an exchange student. I want to know what to wear. I don't want the answers for what to wear to school in Italy, but what to wear when I go to Italy, such as when I'm outside of Italy. Something modest?

Divorced & Remarry Laws In Italy? If you were married and then divorced under the Australian law! Why would it make any difference to another country such as Italy if the marriage or divorce did not occur in Italy? I'm asking the question as my partners ex-wife has come back from a trip to Italy recently stating to him that they must have their marriage disolved in Italy so she can remarry and if my partner was to remarry without disolving the marriage in Italy and decided he would go to Italy for a holiday their would be a warrant for his arrest??
Moving to Rome, Italy? I might be moving to Rome, Italy in a few years but I am not sure yet. Just wondering, currently if I am a US citizen am I allowed to take my Dell laptop with Windows XP into Italy or is this not allowed? How is housing? Is it like the U.S. with neighborhoods or totally different? I'd be moving with my family, and there is 5 of us all together. How does it work to take pets? Is this allowed? I have a small adult beagle. Is there internet available at the hotels or residential parts of Italy? Any and all information on Italy and Rome, Italy would be greatly appreciated.

ITALY -v- USA -v- REFEREE - Are we seeing another 2002 where referees are told to do what they want ? I have always feared that towards the knockout stages, soon coming, referees begin to take charge of games and begin to influence their outcame. Have we already started to see that with the USA - ITALY game ? Are we on another 2002 World Cup ? Remember the South Korea 2002 saga... that whichever country played S. Korea the referee weakened them to increase the chances of Korea winning ?! Korea knocked out the best teams in the world... including Spain, Portugal, Italy...They should have been the 2002 champions, not Brazil, LOL ! Something very peculiar was going on in the USA - ITALY match today... With 9 and 10 men, neither team knew what to do anymore !! Their tactics and plans completely gone out of the window... "WHAT THE HELL DO I DO NOW..." and "NOW I SHOULD PASS THE BALL TO THAT GUY BUT HE IS NOT THERE... ONLY SPACE "..... Reading some of these answers, (and Brazil has just score thier second goal) it is nice not to feel alone in this fear of this becoming yet another Referees' World Cup.
Pre Med in Italy? Medical school in Italy? Help!? I am an American of Italian descent, and hold dual citizenship. I speak Italian fluently, and have always dreamed of attending undergraduate school and, depending on where life takes me, possibly medical school in Italy. I was wondering if it would be feasible for me to go to undergraduate school in Italy if I'd like to go to medical school back in the U.S. From talking to people who have attended Italian universities, I have found out that you select your "major" at the very beginning and take classes only pertaining to those majors. How would someone like me be able to take all the required science courses (physics, biology, physical and organic chemistry, anatomy, etc.) plus the humanities in Italy in order to get into an American medical school and take the MCAT? Are there any American universities in Italy which allow students to take heavy science courses? In looking online, I've only found colleges which give liberal arts courses; none of which I want to major in.
Where in Italy should I go? I seriously want to go to Italy this summer. Last year, I went for a week's vacation in Venice. It was really beautiful, and I kind of want to go there again but I don't want to limit myself to one place. I was thinking about going to Florence for one week and then the next week I would go back to Venice. Can anybody recommend other places in Italy (North/Central/South) that would make for a nice vacation?
